11 Straight Wins! A Little plug for the Alma Mater:

With the losses of Oregon and Kansas State, mayhem has now ensued at the top of the BCS standings, and the national title picture is officially wide open.

Notre Dame has the inside track to reach the national title game. They’re 11-0 and have reeled off wins over four top 20 teams, including a very impressive win against Oklahoma on the road.

However, the Irish still have a game remaining with USC, and even as the Trojans flounder, the contest will still be difficult. However, it gets a bit easier if Matt Barkley’s injury is serious and will keep him out of next Saturday’s game.

A one-loss Alabama has gone from on the outside looking in to having an inside track to the championship in only one week. The Crimson Tide has two games remaining, one against a porous Auburn squad and the other in the SEC title game versus Georgia.

The Tigers should be an easy win for Bama, despite the game’s rivalry status, but the matchup with the Bulldogs is a different story; not only will Alabama have a national title berth on the line, Georgia likely will as well.

Georgia features an explosive passing attack under the watch of Aaron Murray and its defense is no slouch either, holding opponents to 18.8 points a game.

Alabama will still have the advantage though. Its offense has been consistently solid all season, averaging 38.1 points a contest. But the Tide defense is the squad’s biggest advantage. It’s an absolutely stifling and swarming unit, holding opponents to just 10.1 points a contest.

Which team is the most likely to be in the BCS national title game?

  • Notre Dame

  • Alabama

  • Georgia

  • Oregon

  • Florida State

  • Kansas State

Florida State has now entered the title picture as well.

The likely ACC champs have only one loss on the year, and it came by one point. Plus, the Seminoles have a game remaining against a top-10 team in Florida, which if they win will give them a significant boost in the human and computer rankings.

It’s a longshot that would require Notre Dame plus Oregon and Kansas State to lose again, but Florida State could conceivably be playing in the Orange Bowl for a national title.

And did I mention Oregon and Kansas State yet? Their losses set off this whole chain of events, but they’re not done yet either.

Both still have a puncher’s chance to jump back into the title picture. It would take a lot of losses, most notably from Notre Dame and Florida State—an SEC team will be in either way—but it’s still possible.

Although, Oregon would now need Stanford to fall next week to UCLA to even reach the Pac-12 title game.
